Unit Price Comparison
Is the big pack really cheaper? Find out in seconds.
Why unit price matters
Retailers make larger sizes look like better value — but this isn't always true. Own-brand smaller sizes, items on sale, or products with different quality levels sometimes beat the "value" bulk pack. Unit price removes the illusion.
Reading shelf labels
Many supermarkets show a unit price on the shelf label (per 100g, per liter, etc.). However, they don't always use the same unit across products — one brand may show per 100g and another per oz, making direct comparison impossible without conversion. This calculator standardises everything.
Frequently asked questions
Is the biggest package always the best value?
Not always. Sale prices, store brands, or pack promotions sometimes make smaller sizes cheaper per unit. Always check.
How do I compare items with different units (oz vs grams)?
Convert to a common unit before comparing. 1 oz = 28.35 g. This calculator handles one unit type at a time — convert quantities before entering if units differ.
What does "per 100g" mean on packaging?
It's the price for 100 grams of the product, used for standardised comparison. Divide the total price by the weight in grams, then multiply by 100.
Should I account for waste or yield?
For produce, fish or meat with bones, the edible portion is less than the total weight. Adjust the quantity downward by the estimated waste percentage for a true cost comparison.
