What LegalKit covers
LegalKit is a small suite of estate-planning education tools for US families. It opens with the intestate succession calculator, which estimates how an estate would be divided under state law when a person dies without a valid will — modeled on the Uniform Probate Code (UPC), the most widely used reference framework, adopted in full or close variant by roughly 18 states. Every tool here is for general education only, never a substitute for advice from a licensed attorney in your own state.
Why "without a will" matters
Dying intestate hands the decision entirely to a state statute — not to the decedent's actual wishes. The outcome can surprise people: a surviving spouse doesn't always inherit everything, unmarried partners inherit nothing under intestacy in every state, and blended families can end up splitting an estate in ways nobody intended. The single best way to avoid the default outcome is a valid, up-to-date will.
