Bill Splitter
Split the bill in seconds — evenly or by custom amounts.
Tip on pre-tax or post-tax?
In the US, tipping on the pre-tax amount is the standard recommendation — the server doesn't benefit from the tax collected. On a $100 pre-tax bill with 8% tax, tipping 18% on pre-tax gives $18 tip; tipping on post-tax gives $19.44. This calculator tips on the subtotal (pre-tax).
Custom splits
When people order very different amounts, the custom mode lets each person enter their own subtotal. Tip and tax are added proportionally based on each person's share of the total.
Frequently asked questions
Does tip apply before or after tax?
This calculator applies tip to the subtotal before tax — the conventional approach in the US.
What if one person isn't drinking?
Use custom amounts — enter each person's individual food/drink subtotal and the tip/tax are distributed proportionally.
How do I handle a shared dish?
Add it to the bill total and split evenly, or divide it manually between the people who shared it and enter those as custom amounts.
Can I split with different tip percentages per person?
Not directly — use the custom amount mode to set each person's subtotal, then each person tips separately as they prefer.
