Tip percentage
Standard tip percentages
In the US: 15% is the historical baseline (now considered low); 18% is standard for adequate service; 20% for good service; 25%+ for exceptional. In the UK, tipping is less standardised — 10–12.5% is common. In many Asian and European countries, tipping is not expected or is much smaller.
Tipping on takeout
Takeout tipping etiquette varies. 10–15% is typical for orders requiring preparation; no tip is generally acceptable for simple counter service.
Frequently asked questions
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Pre-tax is the standard recommendation. The tax is a government charge the server doesn't receive.
What's an appropriate tip for bad service?
If the service was genuinely poor (as opposed to kitchen delays, which aren't the server's fault), 10–12% is considered acceptable. Speak to the manager about serious problems.
Do I tip on a coupon-discounted bill?
Tip on the full pre-discount amount — the server provided the same level of service regardless of your discount.
Is it rude not to tip in the US?
In the US, servers typically earn below minimum wage with tips making up most of their income. Not tipping is considered very poor etiquette except in cases of genuinely unacceptable service.
