Van Weight Budget Calculator (GVWR)
Keep every kilogram of insulation, furniture, batteries, water and gear inside the payload your van is actually rated to carry.
Payload capacity, and what eats into it
Payload capacity is simply GVWR minus the van's base (unladen) weight. Every addition in a conversion — insulation, framing and furniture, the electrical system including batteries, water when the tanks are full, passengers and everyday gear or cargo — draws down that same fixed payload budget, so this tool sums them all against the same limit.
Why builders routinely underestimate build weight
It's easy to price and weigh the big-ticket items — batteries, tanks, cabinetry — but forget the smaller additions that add up: fasteners, wiring, insulation adhesive, flooring, extra water jugs, tools carried permanently, and the little conveniences added after the “finished” build. Add a buffer to your estimates rather than budgeting to the exact kilogram.
Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between GVWR and payload capacity?
GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating) is the maximum total weight the van is rated to safely carry, including the van itself. Payload capacity is GVWR minus the van's own base (unladen) weight — it's the weight budget available for everything you add: conversion, gear, and people.
Where do I find my van's base weight and GVWR?
Both are usually printed on a certification/compliance label inside the driver's door jamb, or listed in the vehicle's manual or registration documents. For accuracy, an empty weigh-station or public weighbridge reading of the base van is more reliable than the label alone.
What happens if my build goes over the GVWR?
Driving over GVWR can affect handling, braking distance and tire wear, may void parts of your vehicle warranty or insurance in a collision, and can result in a fine if you're weighed by authorities. Trim weight from furniture, water carried, or gear until you're back under the limit.
Should I weigh the finished van even if this calculator says I'm under budget?
Yes — this tool works from estimated weights, and real materials, fasteners, wiring and finishing touches often weigh more than planned. A full weigh-in with a full tank of fuel, full water tanks and passengers aboard is the only way to confirm you're truly within GVWR.
