Seasickness Risk & Itinerary Smoothness Estimator

Get a general, informational sense of how smooth or rough a route is likely to feel before you pick a cabin — this is not medical advice.

How the estimate is built

The rating starts from a typical motion baseline for the route (protected waters like the Caribbean or Alaska's Inside Passage tend to be calmer than open-ocean crossings), adjusts for the time of year (winter and hurricane-season months add risk), and adjusts again for ship size, since larger modern ships generally use stabilizers and greater mass to ride noticeably steadier than smaller vessels.

What this estimator can't tell you

It can't predict the weather on your specific sailing date, and it doesn't account for your personal sensitivity to motion. Treat the rating as a general planning signal — useful for comparing itineraries or deciding how much to prioritize a mid-ship, lower-deck cabin — not a forecast.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the Caribbean get a hurricane-season bump?

The Atlantic hurricane season (roughly June through November) can bring distant swell and rougher seas to Caribbean itineraries even when no storm is directly nearby, so the estimate adds a seasonal adjustment for those months.

Is a big ship always the smoothest choice?

Generally yes for typical conditions — more mass and modern stabilizers reduce roll — but no ship size eliminates motion entirely in genuinely rough open-ocean weather.

What if I'm prone to motion sickness regardless of the rating?

Talk to a doctor or pharmacist ahead of your trip about prevention options, and consider booking a mid-ship, lower-deck cabin regardless of the route's overall rating — cabin location is one of the few factors fully within your control.
