Why "grossing up" isn't simple division
You might think a $60,000 target take-home just means adding back a flat percentage, but federal tax is progressive and FICA has its own rules — so the relationship between gross and net pay isn't linear. This tool solves it the way payroll systems do: it guesses a gross amount, computes the resulting net pay under 2024 brackets and FICA, compares it to your target, and adjusts — repeating until the numbers converge.
What's included and what isn't
The calculation includes federal income tax (2024 brackets, standard deduction) and FICA — 6.2% Social Security up to the $168,600 wage base, plus 1.45% Medicare with no cap. It does not include state or local income tax, which varies enormously (zero in some states, over 10% in others) — add your state's effective rate manually for a closer real-world number.
Not tax advice. Figures use the 2024 federal tax year and are estimates for general education only — every situation is different. Confirm your numbers with a CPA or tax professional, and check the current year's IRS figures, before filing or making financial decisions.
