Extended Warranty Value Calculator

Is that extended warranty or protection plan actually worth the price? Run the numbers.

The math behind "is it worth it?"

An extended warranty is really a small bet: you pay a fixed price now to avoid a larger, uncertain repair cost later. "Expected value" — the repair probability multiplied by the repair cost — gives you a single number to compare against the warranty's price. If the expected cost is higher than the warranty, it pays off on average; if it's lower, you're likely paying more for the plan than the risk is worth.

Averages, not guarantees

Expected value describes what happens on average across many purchases, not what will happen to your one specific item. Buy the warranty and nothing breaks — you don't get the money back. Skip it and something breaks — you pay the full repair cost. This tool helps you make the statistically sound choice, but there's no version of this decision that's risk-free either way.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I get the repair probability number?

Look at manufacturer reliability data, published failure rates for that model or category, or your own experience with similar devices. It's always an estimate — try running the calculator with a slightly higher and lower probability to see how sensitive the answer is.

If the warranty isn't "worth it" on paper, is it always a bad idea?

Not necessarily. Expected value ignores risk tolerance — some people are willing to pay extra for the peace of mind of a fixed, known cost instead of a possible large, unexpected repair bill. That's a valid reason to buy one even if the math is close.

Does this account for the warranty covering multiple possible failures?

No, it uses one combined probability and one average repair cost. If a plan covers several different failure types, add up the individual (probability × cost) for each one first, then enter the total as the repair cost with 100% probability.

What about store credit card or manufacturer warranties I already have?

Factor in what's already covered — if the manufacturer's standard warranty already covers the most likely failure for the period you care about, the extended plan's real added value is lower than it looks, since it's only paying for risk beyond what you're already covered for.
