How are HTTP status codes grouped?

Every time a browser requests a page or file from a server, the server returns a three-digit status code in response. The first digit of that code identifies its general category: 1xx codes are informational, 2xx means the request succeeded, 3xx means you need to be redirected to another address, 4xx means the problem is on the client side (like a wrong address or missing permission), and 5xx means something went wrong on the server.

Why is knowing these codes useful?

When a website or API fails, the status code is usually the first clue. Knowing the difference between 404 and 410, or between 502 and 503, can tell you within seconds whether a problem is temporary, permanent, or something the user needs to act on — useful both for developers debugging an issue and for site owners reviewing error reports.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between 401 and 403?

401 means you have not authenticated yet (you need to log in), while 403 means access is forbidden even after authenticating.

Why do I sometimes see 410 instead of 404?

410 (Gone) explicitly states the resource has been permanently removed, while 404 only says nothing was found at that address and may be temporary.

What does a 429 code mean and what should I do?

It means you have sent too many requests in a short time window; you should usually wait a bit and then try the request again.

Are 5xx codes my fault or the server's?

5xx codes indicate a server-side error, not an issue with your browser or device; in these cases you typically need to wait or contact the site owner.
