GPA Calculator

Enter your courses, credit hours and letter grades for a credit-weighted cumulative GPA.

How your GPA is actually calculated

Grade point average is not a simple average of letter grades — it's weighted by credit hours. Each letter grade converts to points on the 4.0 scale (A = 4.0, A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, and so on down to F = 0.0), that figure is multiplied by the course's credit hours to get “quality points,” and your GPA is the sum of quality points divided by the sum of credit hours. A 4-credit A pulls your average up more than a 1-credit A does, which is exactly why credit-hour weighting matters.

Weighted vs. unweighted GPA

An unweighted GPA treats every class the same regardless of difficulty. A weighted GPA adds bonus points for tougher courses — commonly +1.0 for AP or IB classes and +0.5 for honors classes, though the exact bonus varies by school and some use different scales entirely (like a 5.0 max). Toggle “Weighted GPA” above and set each course's level to see both numbers; if you need this to match your transcript exactly, confirm your school's specific weighting policy first.

Frequently asked questions

Does this match the GPA on my official transcript?

It should if you enter the same courses, credit hours and grades your school uses, and set the weighting toggle to match your school's policy. Schools differ in how they round, whether they weight AP versus honors differently, and whether repeated courses count once or twice — always treat your registrar's number as authoritative.

What if my school uses plus/minus grades differently?

Some schools don't distinguish A from A+ (both count as 4.0, since 4.0 is usually the ceiling), while others cap at a straight 4.0 and treat A+ the same as A. This calculator caps every grade at 4.0, which matches the most common convention.

How much do AP and honors bonuses actually vary?

A lot. Some high schools add a full extra point for AP/IB and half a point for honors; others use a 5.0-point scale instead of adding a flat bonus; some don't weight GPA at all until senior year. There's no single national standard, so treat the weighted number here as an estimate unless you've confirmed your school's exact rule.

Can I use this for college GPA too?

Yes — the underlying math (quality points ÷ credit hours) is the same in college as in high school. Most colleges don't apply AP/honors-style weighting to their own GPA, so you'd normally leave the weighted toggle off for a college GPA.
