Smart Home Device Cost Estimator
Add up every device on your smart home shopping list to see the real upfront cost — and what it actually costs once cloud subscriptions are included for a full year.
What this total includes
This tool adds up the upfront hardware cost of every device category you plan to buy, then layers on a full year of any monthly subscription or cloud-service fees — video storage, advanced automations or professional monitoring — to show a realistic first-year cost of ownership, not just a shopping-cart total.
Start small, expand later
Most smart homes grow one room or one device category at a time. Set quantities to 0 for anything you are not buying yet, and re-run the estimate as your plan changes — the per-unit prices make it easy to compare a budget brand against a premium one before you commit.
Frequently asked questions
Should I count the hub or bridge separately even if a device works without one?
Yes — many smart locks, thermostats and cameras work fine on their own Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, but a dedicated hub or bridge usually unlocks faster local automation, better reliability and support for additional protocols like Zigbee or Z-Wave. Include it if your plan calls for one, or set its quantity to 0 if it is not needed.
What counts as a monthly subscription or cloud-service fee?
Any recurring charge required to unlock core features — cloud video storage for a security camera, an advanced automation plan for a thermostat, or a professional monitoring add-on for a lock or alarm system. Basic local control is usually free; storage, AI detection and remote monitoring are the features that typically carry a monthly fee.
Why does the calculator show a first-year total separate from the hardware total?
Hardware is a one-time purchase, but subscriptions are ongoing. Separating the two lets you see the real "true cost of ownership" for year one, and estimate future years by simply multiplying the monthly subscription figure by 12 again without re-buying any hardware.
Are the default prices realistic?
The pre-filled unit prices are realistic mid-range estimates for each device category, but actual prices vary widely by brand, region and feature set — replace any default with the actual price of the product you are planning to buy for a more accurate total.
