Why the Persian calendar can't be converted by subtraction
The Persian (Jalali) calendar is solar and highly accurate, but its leap years follow a 33-year cycle rather than the simple divide-by-four rule of the Gregorian calendar. That's why adding a fixed offset to the year gets you close but not right. This converter uses the standard astronomical algorithm, which is exact across a wide range of years.
Hijri dates are approximate by nature
The Islamic calendar is lunar and traditionally depends on sighting the new moon, so the official date varies by a day or two between countries. The figure shown here follows the Umm al-Qura computational calendar used by most digital systems. For religious observances, check your local authority.
Leap years in the Persian calendar
A Persian leap year runs to 366 days and Esfand, the final month, gets a 30th day. Because the leap pattern is a 33-year cycle, you can't work it out by dividing by four — the converter flags it for you.
Frequently asked questions
How accurate is the conversion?
Gregorian and Persian conversion is exact. Hijri is computed with the Umm al-Qura calendar and, because the Islamic calendar depends on moon sighting, it may differ by a day from an official local calendar.
Does it work for dates far in the past?
Yes. The algorithm is valid across a wide range of years, so birth dates and historical records convert reliably.
Is 30 Esfand a valid date?
Only in a Persian leap year. In leap years it converts correctly; in other years it is rejected as invalid.
What is Jalali or Shamsi?
They are names for the same calendar — the Persian solar calendar used officially in Iran and Afghanistan.
