Weighted Grade Calculator

Add each grading category, its weight and your score, and get your final class grade.

How a weighted final grade is built

Most classes don't grade everything equally — a syllabus might make tests worth 30% of your grade, homework worth 15%, quizzes 20% and the final exam 35%. To get your overall grade, multiply your average score in each category by its weight, add those up, and divide by the total weight (which should normally be 100%, but this calculator normalizes correctly even if your weights don't quite add up). The result is your true final percentage, not a simple average of every individual assignment.

Using it to plan, not just check

This calculator is just as useful before the semester ends as after it: add your known category averages so far, then try different hypothetical scores for the final exam category to see what grade you'd need on it to land where you want. That turns “what do I need on the final” from a guess into an actual number, the same way the target-GPA calculator works backward from a cumulative goal.

Frequently asked questions

What if my weights don't add up to exactly 100%?

The math still works — weighted sum divided by total weight normalizes automatically, so 15+20+30+30 (summing to 95) gives the same correctly-weighted result as if it summed to 100. The calculator flags it anyway in case your syllabus expects an exact 100% total.

Can I use this to figure out what I need on my final?

Yes — enter your current average for every category except the final exam, then adjust the final-exam score field up and down until the final grade shown matches your target. That's the fastest way to answer “what do I need on the final to get a B?”

Does it show a letter grade too?

Yes, using the standard percentage-to-letter breakpoints (93%+ is an A, 90–92.99% is an A−, and so on) — the same table used by the GPA Scale Converter tool. Your school's exact letter cutoffs may differ slightly.

What if a category has extra credit or a dropped lowest score?

Enter your category average after applying those adjustments yourself — for example, if your teacher drops your lowest quiz, average only the quizzes that count before typing your quiz-category score in.
